After a long day at our family-owned and operated pet sitting business, Happy Tails Pet Sitting, Dorothy (Mom) was commenting that she was going to be up all night making more treats for the next day’s clientele. Through trial and error in our family kitchen, we had developed our own dog and cat treat recipes, that included the most simple, nutritious and delicious ingredients. For the past few years we had been making these “treats” and leaving them as a thank-you for our clients and their fury friends. Not long after we started doing this, we found out that the treats had become a much in-demand product. Many clients were calling, saying their dog and/or cat was no longer enjoying the commercial dog/cat treats they had been buying for years and were asking how they could get more of our home-made, all-natural treats. We were also getting requests from clients for additional treats to give as gifts to their friends and family with dogs and cats.
Due to the demand for our all-natural pet treats, we started Pawmetto Pet Treats based out of Columbia, South Carolina. With Mom leading the ship, we moved into our “bone factory” in February 2008 to start baking, bagging and delivering our pet treats to the public. We have a presence in more than 100 retail establishments in South Carolina and are growing rapidly throughout the Southeast. We are also able to satisfy customers across the globe through our online 24/7 “Pet Treat Store. ”
In the beginning, our marketing plan was to give these treats away to our target market: veterinarians, groomers and pet stores. People gladly took our treats and allowed us to leave behind our brochures. In October 2007, we submitted our recipes to the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and North Carlina State University, seeking approval of product and ingredient certification. This is how Pawmetto Pet Treats
became the first South Carolina certified pet treat; and to this date, we are the only human consumption pet food item to be certified by
the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, as well as the
South Carolina Specialty Food Association. North Carolina State University has since deemed our product safe for consumption, with an unlimited shelf-life.
Dorothy Williamson (CFO/Executive Vice President of Research and Development):
The founder and “head chef” behind Pawmetto Pet Treats, our Mom, Dorothy, can be found everywhere, doing a little bit of everything. She is constantly checking for quality and consistency in our products coming out of the factory including taste-testing as all of our products are “human grade” and perfectly healthy and yummy for owners to enjoy as well. You’ll also find Mom out in the community at local events to support our four-legged friends, hauling boxes off to the Post Office, working our booth at local events, and at night cuddled up on the couch with Sug, our family dog.
Forrest Williamson (Director of Distribution and Customer Relations):
The youngest member of our clan, Forrest is the go-to guy for delivering our products around the region and checking in on our retail clients. You’ll often find Forrest putting together one of our unique and utterly appealing display racks in a local supermarket or specialty shop. These home-made racks are just another special part of our commitment to quality and put our family stamp on everyone.
Jennifer Williamson (Director of Operations): Co-founder and pet sitting extraordinaire, Jennifer’s work with our original family business Happy Tail’s Petting Sitting, was the impetus for Pawmetto Pet Treats. Working closely with Mom on administrative oversight, Jennifer is key to the success of Pawmetto Pet Treats.

Sands Williamson (CMO/Executive Vice President): Sands, working out of a satellite office in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina is leading our Sales and Marketing team in the low country and is actively involved in many local and statewide groups that support animals and the Certified South Carolina program. With close to ten years sales and marketing experience and a graduate of the University of South Carolina (USC), Sands is a proven leader and is committed to helping South Carolina business’ grow.
Sug (Official Taste Tester): Sug joined our family in 2005, and has been our best friend since. Serving as our official taste tester, Sug is an important part of the team.
Tommy Williamson (President and CEO): Like Mom you can often find our eldest brother, Tommy, bouncing around greater Columbia and beyond building relationships and “manning the booth” at festivals and events across the region including the Americas Mart and Paula Deen’s Cooking Conference. Tommy is the master networker of the family whose motor never stops and he is always working with great passion to ensure we keep a close personal touch on everything we do.
To date, we have three great dog treat flavors to choose from (Peanut Butter with Flaxseed, Cheddar Cheese, and Wheat-Free) and our Cheddar/Parmesan Cat Treat. We are constantly taste-testing additional flavors and researching ingredients with nutritional benefits. Look for upcoming products to include essential nutrients and vitamins to help your pet live a long and happy life. These are “Pet treats with a South Carolina flair.”
